Networking: Is it for airheads or a real way of doing business?

It seems the buzzword of the last 20 years has been networking. Over time, it has become an almost integral part of the Western World's way of doing business. Going to conferences, joining industry groups, training seminars are just some of the myriad of methods employed by business today to retain or gain new custom. Small businesses however are time poor and as a rule, the funds to leave for a few days conferencing is a luxury precious few can enjoy.

Enter the world of the networking breakfast. This allows small business to meet with other folk and share experiences and pass on valuable leads to each other. Backscratchers has a current membership of 35+ businesses. That means that each day each member has 35 sales people out there on the road ready to refer your business to their clients should the need arise. All this for a little more than the cost of breakfast each week, now that is what anyone would call value for money.

For example say each member came into contact with 3 people a day in the normal course of their business that is over 500 contacts a week that are made by people who have come to know you and can refer you in the knowledge that that have met you and maybe even referred you to others.

Each week at Backscratcher, breakfast's referrals are passed to each member. Each referral costs a dollar that is donated to the Toowoomba Hospice. Each week about 15-20 solid leads are passed to business owners who had no idea that some gem of business was to fall into their lap from a fellow Backscratcher.

Yeah networking it's a funny word but it works...
